Description
Zonosaurus laticaudatus is a lizard in the shield lizard family (Gerrhosauridae). The species is endemic in Madagascar.

Appearance
Western girdled lizard is a medium-sized lizard with a robustly built body. Its skin is covered in thick and rough scales, predominantly grey to brown in coloration, with dark lateral banding on the sides. Its most distinctive feature is the broad tail which is serrated along the sides. There are no marked differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Western girdled lizard is a diurnal and territorial species, specializing in foraging behavior. Highly adapted to arid conditions, it excavates the ground for food and water. Western girdled lizard is largely solitary, only socializing during mating sessions. It defends territory by head bobbing and tail waving, distinct behaviors in conflict situations.
