Diet
Galápagos sea lion primarily feeds on a diet of fish and squid. The species also consumes cephalopods and crustaceans, specially adapted to dive deeply for these marine foods.
Appearance
The galápagos sea lion is a mid-sized seal, known for its smooth, robust body and glossy fur. Coats mainly display different shades of brown, while males often possess a prominent sagittal crest on their heads. Pups are recognized by their black fur, which eventually changes to brown. Their webbed flippers and the absence of external ear flaps add distinguishing features to this species.
Behavior
Galápagos sea lion are highly social, usually forming large colonies. They are diving specialists, using their robust torsos to hunt for food in deep waters. Notably, males display a unique territorial call, referred to as 'barking,' to assert dominance during the breeding season. Their adaptive behavior aligns with survival in coastal and marine environments.
