Diet
California sea lion's primary source of nutrition comes from a diverse array of aquatic prey. Its diet largely comprises squids, octopuses, and various fish species. They specifically favor sardines, anchovies, and mackerel. Their feeding times often coincide with the prevalence of these species.
Appearance
California sea lion are medium-sized marine mammals with a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body, and smooth, short-fur-covered skin. Predominantly a deep brownish-black, their backs are slightly darker than their bellies. Characteristically, they have large, hairless flippers, bulbous foreheads, and a long, downward-facing snout. Juveniles resemble adults but are lighter in color. There are no significant gender-based differences in appearance.
Behavior
California sea lion displays remarkable social behavior, living in large colonies and performing synchronized swimming. This species spends much time sun-bathing, grooming, and taking care of pups. Notably, males exhibit territorial behavior, staking claims on beach areas to form harems during the breeding season. Their natural dive and surf abilities play a crucial role in foraging survival, adapted to their aquatic habitat.
