Diet
The diet of round-tailed ground squirrel mainly comprises various plant species. It feeds significantly on seeds, fruits, flowers and stems of herbaceous plants, and occasionally consumes insects and small vertebrates. In dry seasons, it relies heavily on seeds for sustenance.
Appearance
Round-tailed ground squirrel is a small, ground-dwelling squirrel. It has a slender body covered in coarse fur, predominantly light brown and stippled with white or gray. Evidently, its tail is cylindrical, tapering sharply at the end. Distinguishably, round-tailed ground squirrel has a uniquely narrow, long snout and rounded ears. Sexual dimorphism is minimal, with no significant appearance differences between genders. Its compact design facilitates its burrowing lifestyle.
Behavior
Round-tailed ground squirrel is a hibernating, diurnal species, primarily solitary except during mating. Exhibiting a keen foraging behavior, it actively scavenges for seeds and small arthropods. They generally establish territory within burrow networks, displaying distinctive tail-waving when threatened. Round-tailed ground squirrel’s predilection for hibernation and profound foraging skills are adaptive for its arid desert habitats.
