Müller's platanna (Xenopus muelleri) is a species of frog in the Pipidae family found in Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Appearance
Muller's clawed frog is a medium-sized amphibian with a slightly compressed body shape, smooth skin, and protruding eyes. Its color ranges from dark olive to brown, often with lighter undersides. Females are typically larger than males. Its most distinctive features are its fully webbed hind feet, useful in its predominantly aquatic lifestyle, and lateral-line system, visible as a series of small, linear pores on the skin.
Behavior
Muller's clawed frog is a nocturnal species, emerging at dusk to forage for algae, organic debris and small invertebrates. Its social structure is predominantly solitary, with occasional aggregations. Unique survival adaptations include a defensive toxic skin secretion, and a rare behaviour of aestivation, which is a state of dormancy triggered by high temperatures or droughts.
