Description
The Cape clawed frog, Cape platanna or Gill's platanna (Xenopus gilli) is a species of frogs in the family Pipidae endemic to South Africa. Its natural habitats are Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marshes, and ponds. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Appearance
Cape clawed toad is a medium-sized frog with smooth skin. It has distinguishing orange to reddish-brown coloration on its back, contrasted by pale yellow or white belly. The eyes of cape clawed toad are typically set atop its triangular head and can vary between yellow and tan. Additionally, it has webbed hind feet for proficient swimming. There are no significant differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Cape clawed toad is a nocturnal, semi-aquatic creature that hunts by adopting a sit-and-wait strategy for small aquatic invertebrates. Individualistic in nature, it uses chemical, tactile, and auditory signals for communication rather than forming groups. This species is neither migratory nor territorial. Adapted to freshwater environments, cape clawed toad has the unique ability to aestivate during drought conditions, burying itself in the mud.
