Description

The yellow-spotted keelback (Fowlea flavipunctatus) is a species of colubrid snake found inIndia, Thailand, China, West Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan) Its type locality is: Island of Hong Kong (Hong Kong) and Canton River?, China IUCN includes Taiwan in the range of F. flavipunctatus, but excludes India, Malaysia, and Indonesia. F. f. schnurrenbergeri of Nepal is now considered an independent species, Fowlea schnurrenbergeri.

Diet

Yellow-spotted keelback primarily subsists on small amphibians, specifically tadpoles and frogs. Its sharp teeth facilitate the capture and consumption of these slippery prey, allowing it to maintain an amphibian-centric diet.

Appearance

Yellow-spotted keelback is a medium-sized, slender snake with smooth scales. Its main coloration is olive green or brown, adorned with irregular yellow spots and a series of black specks. The underbelly is pale, contrasting with the upper body. It has a long, thin tail and markings around the eyes stand out. No significant differences in appearance occur due to age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

Yellow-spotted keelback is a semi-aquatic snake that exhibits substantial nocturnal activity. It primarily hunts for its diet of amphibians and fish under the cover of darkness. Typically solitary, it exhibits aggressive territorial behavior, lunging and biting when threatened. Its yellow spots aid in camouflage within its predominantly water-based habitats.
