Description
The lace monitor or lace goanna (Varanus varius) is a member of the monitor lizard family, Australian members of which are commonly known as goannas. It belongs to the subgenus Varanus.

Lace monitor is primarily carnivorous, hunting and feeding on a wide range of prey including insects, spiders, small mammals, and birds. This arboreal predator is also known to enjoy eggs, making diverse nests its hunting grounds.
Appearance
The lace monitor is a large monitor lizard, typically measuring from 1.5 to 2 meters in length. It has a sleek, muscular body covered in rough, scaly skin predominantly gray with intricate pattern of creamy-yellow spots and bands. The lizard has a long, powerful tail, sharp claws and a slender head with a forked tongue. No significant differences in appearance exist due to age, gender or subspecies.
Behavior
Lace monitor is generally solitary, although occasionally observed in pairs during breeding season. They exhibit diurnal behavior, hunting mostly during the day. Lace monitor's feeding habits include ambush predation, and they are known to eat a wide range of prey. They defend their territory through displays and physical combat.
