Diet

Varanus salvator bivittatus are known for their omnivorous behavior, primarily feeding on various invertebrates and small vertebrates. Their diet can include insects, crustaceans, amphibians, small mammals, and occasionally, carrion and plant matter.

Appearance

Varanus salvator bivittatus is a large, slender lizard with smooth, sleek skin. Distinctive in size, these lizards can measure up to 2.5 meters in length. Their bodies are primarily charcoal-black, melded with yellow and gold streaks, and a pattern of rusty spots. The tail, which is longer than the body, is banded in alternating dark and light rings. Adults of this species maintain consistent appearance without major differences according to age or gender.

Behavior

Varanus salvator bivittatus is a solitary and territorial species, observed to engage in head-bobbing and throat puffing in territorial disputes. Specializing in swimmers, they forage in water bodies for food, skillfully ambushing prey. They lay eggs in burrows or under vegetation, a unique reproductive behavior among monitor lizards.
