Description

The Bengal monitor (Varanus bengalensis) or common Indian monitor, is a monitor lizard found widely distributed over the Indian Subcontinent, as well as parts of Southeast Asia and West Asia. This large lizard is mainly terrestrial, and its length can range from about 61 to 175Â cm from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail. Bengal monitor are generally carnivorous in nature, with small to medium-sized mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, eggs, and insects comprising a substantial portion of their diet. They are also known to consume carrion opportunistically.
Appearance
Bengal monitor is a large lizard with a streamlined body, reaching lengths of up to 120 cm. Its tough skin is primarily a brownish-grey color with rows of darker, uneven spots that extend across the length of its body and tail. The tail is somewhat compressed and longer than the body. Significant variations in size or appearance due to gender, age, or subspecies are not particularly evident in this species.
Behavior
Bengal monitor exhibits a typically solitary lifestyle, enthusiastically climbing and swimming. It forages using its forked tongue to detect prey, primarily feeding at dusk. Participating in sun-bathing activities during the day, it specializes in territorial defense, aggressively displaying its inflated body and throat, accompanied by hissing sounds.
