Description
Kodiak bear demonstrates unique adaptability within the animal kingdom. Its island-based existence qualifies it as a solitary, yet versatile predator, subsisting largely on a diet of fish, but proficient in hunting a variety of prey as per seasonal availability. This remarkable behavioral plasticity coincides with its over-arching ecological role as a keystone species, thereby significantly impacting its biological community.

Diet
Kodiak bear principally relies on salmon for sustenance, showcasing piscivorous behaviour. The seasonally available fish complemented by plant food, berries and smaller wildlife forms a diverse diet, providing important nutritional balance.
Appearance
Kodiak bear is a large-bodied bear, having long, thick fur that ranges from dark brown to blond. Notable for its pronounced hump at the shoulders caused by strong muscles, and long, straight claws on its forefeet. Substantial size differences exist, males being much larger than females.
Behavior
Kodiak bear primarily demonstrates solitary behavior, with large home ranges frequently marked by claw and bite marks on trees to communicate their presence to others in the area. Notably, this species shows an unusual, primarily piscivorous diet in contrast to its relatives, exhibiting significant forging in coastal waters for salmon. Kodiak bear also undergo semi-hibernation during the winter months in dens, relying on stored fat for survival.
