Description

Uroplatus phantasticus, the satanic leaf-tailed gecko, is a species of gecko indigenous to the island of Madagascar. First described in 1888 by George Albert Boulenger, U. phantasticus is the smallest in body of the Uroplatus geckos, though there is an ongoing debate as to whether one of its cousins, U. ebenaui, is smaller because of its shorter tail. It may also be known as the eyelash leaf-tailed gecko or the fantastic leaf-tailed gecko.

Diet

Satanic leaf-tailed gecko predominantly feeds on a variety of insects, with a particular preference for moths, flies, beetles, and spiders. The species demonstrates nocturnal feeding behavior, usually hunting at twilight.

Appearance

Satanic leaf-tailed gecko is a relatively small, leaf-tailed gecko. It has an elongated body and smooth, mottled skin that gives it a bark-like appearance. This intriguing camouflage ranges from brown to grey, often with irregular blotches or stripes mimicking tree bark or leaves. Its broad, flattened tail is leaf-shaped, a defining feature that enhances its disguise. A ridge of skin, called a frill, runs from its eyes down to its tail, contributing to its unique profile.

Behavior

Satanic leaf-tailed gecko primarily exhibits nocturnal behavior, foraging for insects after sundown. This species is solitary, remaining largely inactive during the day, camouflaging itself among tree leaves. Notably, in order to ward off predators, satanic leaf-tailed gecko displays a distinctive form of mimicry, imitating discarded, dying leaves.
