Description
The Cayenne caecilian, Typhlonectes compressicauda, is a species of amphibian in the Typhlonectidae family that lives in water. It is found in the Amazonian Brazil, Peru, and Colombia as well as in Guyana and French Guiana, and likely Suriname, and according to some sources, Venezuela. It is an aquatic caecilian that inhabits permanent rivers and marshes mainly in the lowland forest zone.

Cayenne caecilian primarily subsists on small invertebrates. It specifically prefers soft-bodied prey such as annelid worms, insect larvae, and small crustaceans, which it catches with a swift lunge and grasp method.
Appearance
Cayenne caecilian is a fully aquatic caecilian with a long, eel-like body that typically measures 30–50 cm in length. It lacks limbs and has lateral compression in its posterior region. Its skin is dark purple or black, often mottled with a lighter belly. This species possesses tiny, lidless eyes and a tentacle located between the eye and the nostril. There is no significant differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Cayenne caecilian are primarily aquatic, nocturnal creatures, exhibiting a sedentary lifestyle partly attributable to their low metabolic rate. They display a unique reproductive behavior where they bear live young instead of laying eggs. Feeding mainly on small aquatic invertebrates, cayenne caecilian has solitary foraging habits, but oftentimes, they demonstrate a degree of social behavior through communal living in burrows.
