Description
Tropidurus torquatus is a species of lizard in the subfamily Tropidurinae, the Neotropical ground lizards. Its common name is Amazon lava lizard.

Amazon lava lizard follows a predominantly omnivorous dietary habit, with a preference for plant matter, particularly cacti and bromeliads. This species also consumes a variety of invertebrates, notably insects.
Appearance
Amazon lava lizard is a medium-sized lizard with a robust, flattened body. Its scaled skin features a main coloration of brown to grey, often accompanied by bold black stripes or spots on its back and tails. This species might possess a light-colored collar marking, lending it a ‘torqued’ or ‘collared’ appearance. Males are typically larger and with more vivid coloration than females, and they often display darker throats.
Behavior
Amazon lava lizard is known for its distinctive territorial demeanor, predominantly observed during mating seasons. It's diurnal, primarily feeding on arthropods. Exhibiting a unique thermoregulation behavior, amazon lava lizard basks in the sun during cooler hours. Predominantly solitary, their social interactions are mainly breeding-oriented, marked by dramatic head-bobbing as a display.
