Appearance
Checkerboard worm lizard is a moderately-sized amphisbaenian with a cylindrical, elongated body and a distinctively blunt snout. It lacks external ears and notable appendages, with scales that are smooth and slightly shiny. The body features a bold, bicolor pattern incorporating bands of black and yellow or white. Its tail is short and ends with a vertical split - a unique feature among its kind. This coloration and patterning is typically consistent regardless of age or sex.
Behavior
Checkerboard worm lizard is characterized by nocturnal habits, dwelling in rocky crevices during the day. It is primarily solitary, interacting with others briefly during the mating season. Uniquely, it exhibits caudal autotomy as a defensive strategy against predators, and it has adapted to semi-arid environments, possessing an ability to regulate body temperature effectively.
