General Info
Lifespan
10-15 years
Diet
Vogel’s pit viper is predominantly a carnivore, well noted for preying on small mammals particularly rodents. Its hunting technique involves ambushing prey often at night, utilizing its venom to immobilize them.
Appearance
The vogel’s pit viper is moderately sized with a slender, cylindrical body covered by keeled scales. Adults exhibit strikingly vivid green coloration, while juveniles are rust-brown. The scales form a remarkably distinct, white ventrolateral stripe along each side of the body. Their eyes are golden, contrasting with the dark facial line present. Males are similar in appearance to females, but are distinctively smaller in size.
Behavior
Vogel’s pit viper showcases a primarily nocturnal lifestyle, remaining inactive and hidden during the day. Renowned as a solitary species, they show a remarkable adaption to arboreal life. Engaging in ambush predation, this species stays motionless and waits for prey to approach within striking distance, employing its venomous bite for capturing and subduing prey.
