Description
Trimeresurus sumatranus is a venomous pitviper species found in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Arboreal, its coloration is pale green with a red tail. Two subspecies are currently recognized, including the nominate subspecies described here.

Sumatra pit viper is a carnivorous species feeding predominantly on small mammals. It exhibits a preference for rodents, using its venom to immobilize and digest its prey, ensuring improved nutrient extraction.
Appearance
Sumatra pit viper is a medium-sized, slim pit viper with keeled scales. It is green overall, although the shade can vary, often exhibiting red, yellow, or white lateral stripes. Additionally, their triangular head contains a unique heat-sensing pit between each eye and nostril. Males are generally smaller with more vibrant colors while females are larger and somewhat duller.
Behavior
Sumatra pit viper is a chiefly nocturnal, terrestrial pit viper species. It hunts at night, stunning prey with its venomous bite. Males are known to engage in combat during mating season, while females are ovoviviparous, giving live birth. Notably solitary, sumatra pit viper also display strong site fidelity, often returning to the same resting sites.
