General Info
Lifespan
10-15 years
Diet
Primarily, stejneger's pit viper is a carnivorous snake that predominantly feeds on small mammals, extensively targeting rodents. It also demonstrates a dietary preference for birds and occasionally, small reptiles.
Appearance
Stejneger's pit viper is a moderately sized venomous snake with smooth scales and a triangular-shaped head. This snake predominantly appears in vibrant shades of green, with a distinct red stripe running along the side of its body. The underside is typically pale or white. Unlike many snake species, no significant differences exist in color between males and females, nor between different ages or subspecies.
Behavior
Stejneger's pit viper is a nocturnal, solitary ambush predator, typically waiting patiently for prey rather than actively hunting. Upon sensing prey via heat-sensitive pits between its eyes and nostrils, the species strikes swiftly and accurately. Though venomous, stejneger's pit viper is characterized by a generally non-aggressive demeanor unless provoked. It does not display distinct territorial behaviors.
