Description
Trimeresurus sabahi, commonly known as the Sabah bamboo pitviper, is a venomous pitviper species endemic to the island of Borneo.
General Info
Lifespan
10-15 years
Diet
The fairy pitviper is an ophiophagous animal, primarily feeding on other reptiles including various snakes. It has a preference for arboreal prey, including lizards, birds, and small mammals, often seizing them in mid-air.
Appearance
The fairy pitviper is a medium-sized venomous snake with a slender, elongated body covered in smooth scales. Its primary coloration is green, often with a yellow underside, and it may have black or white irregular stripes along its length. Except for juveniles which are grey or brown, there isn't any significant difference in appearance due to age or gender. This species also hosts a pair of heat-sensitive pit organs located between the eyes and nostrils.
Behavior
The fairy pitviper is a nocturnal, arboreal reptile exhibiting solitary behavior with an ambush predation strategy, typically targeting frogs, lizards, and birds. In mating season, males show pronounced territoriality, defending their females to mate. Remarkably, the fairy pitviper doesn't rely on visual cues alone to locate prey, but distinctively uses heat-sensing capabilities, adapted to its treetop habitat.
