Description
Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus is a venomous pit viper species native to India, Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. Two subspecies are currently recognized, including the nominate subspecies described here.

Mangrove pit viper is an ambush predator, primarily preying on small mammals, birds, and occasionally amphibians. It is a pit viper, using its heat-sensing pits to locate prey.
Appearance
Mangrove pit viper is a mid-sized pit viper with a slender, fully scaled body. Its skin displays a prominent purplish-reddish hue interspersed with occasional dark spots. This species bears a distinctive prehensile tail uniform in color. Despite their venomous nature, they lack any distinguishable horns or wings. There are no prominent visual differences noticeable due to gender or age within the species.
Behavior
Mangrove pit viper is a nocturnal, arboreal viper exhibiting mostly solitary behavior. It's an ambush predator, patiently awaiting its prey - small mammals and birds, by blending into the foliage. While not notably territorial, mangrove pit viper displays an aggressive defensive posture when disturbed, rapidly striking whilst hissing loudly, highlighting its survival adaptation to deter potential threats.
