General Info
Lifespan
12-15 years
Diet
Lesser kudu predominantly grazes on grass, but also browses foliage, herbs, and shrubs when available. This diet is supplemented by fruits, flowers, and succulent shoots, especially during the wet season.
Appearance
Lesser kudu is a medium-sized antelope with a slender build and smooth, short fur. Its body is primarily brown, but the bottom half of its legs are black, creating a striking contrast. The most distinctive feature is their long, spiraling horns, found mainly in males. The animal showcases no significant changes in coloration or appearance with aging, making both sexes relatively similar-looking.
Behavior
Lesser kudu is typically nocturnal and solitary, rarely engaging in social interactions except during the mating period. It employs acute senses to forage, focusing on leaves and buds. It remarkably merges with its habitat using its variable coat color as a form of camouflage. Lesser kudu males mark territory by depositing a secretion from the preorbital gland on grass stalks and shrubs.
