Diet
Colombian slider is primarily an omnivorous species, with a diverse diet largely dominated by plants. Moreover, during its juvenile stage, it displays a higher preference for animal matter, consuming insects, crustaceans, and fish. As it matures, the diet gradually shifts towards a plant-based one, comprising algae, aquatic plants, and fruits.
Appearance
Colombian slider is a medium-sized turtle with an oval, flattened shell covered in scutes, which have unique growth rings. The shell is a striking combination of green and yellow. The bottom shell or 'plastron' is yellow with dark spots. Its body has a characteristic yellow stripe extending from its robust jaw through its eyes to the neck. Neonates are brightly colored compared to adults. The females are generally larger than the males.
Behavior
Colombian slider displays diurnal habits, regularly observed basking along the water bank, which aids in controlling its body temperature and health. It displays a semi-aquatic lifestyle, adept at both swimming and terrestrial activities. Mostly solitary, colombian slider exhibits territoriality, especially during mating season. It primarily feeds on a diet of aquatic plants and small invertebrates.
