Diet
Common sand frog is primarily an insectivore, feeding mainly on ground-dwelling invertebrates. Its diet includes a variety of ants, beetles, and termites, which it hunts actively at night using its specialized tongue.
Appearance
Common sand frog is a relatively small, robust frog, with rough, dry skin. Its primary coloration varies from light sandy to dark brown, often displaying irregular darker patches or spots. The underside of the body tends to be lighter. Limbs are strong and muscular, helpful for burying in loose soil. Males typically exhibit a distinct dark vocal sac beneath their mouth during mating periods, distinguishing them from females. No noticeable differences exist among subspecies or due to age.
Behavior
Common sand frog exhibits nocturnal behaviour, foraging for food and residing in burrows during the day. This species is primarily solitary outside of the mating season. A territorial creature, it defends its dwelling using loud, distinct vocalizations. Adapted to arid climates, it survives harsh conditions by excreting highly concentrated urine to conserve water.
