Description

Theloderma asperum is a frog in the family Rhacophoridae. It is also known as the pied warty frog, hill garden bug-eyed frog, or somewhat informally, bird poop frog. The frog can be found in the northeastern India, Burma, China (Tibet, possibly more widely), Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam as well as Sumatra in Indonesia. Bird poop frog is an insectivorous species, with a primary diet consisting of various types of small invertebrates. Its specific diet includes ants, beetles, and various other insects, indicating a preference for crawling pesky insects isolated from damp environments.

Appearance

Bird poop frog is a small to medium-sized frog, typically measuring 3 to 5 cm in length. It has rough, bumpy skin that imitates the texture of tree bark. Predominantly brown in color, it displays darker patches and bright yellow spots for camouflage. Its rounded body shape and short limbs, coupled with an underside that is uniformly cream or yellow, contribute to its unique appearance. There are no significant differences due to age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

Bird poop frog is a nocturnal amphibian, remaining hidden under debris or in tree holes during daylight. This species' territorial nature is evident as it emits clicking sounds when disturbed or threatened. With remarkable climbing and leaping capabilities, bird poop frog secure their food, typically insects, in the forest canopy.
