Western box turtle primarily sustains on a highly varied omnivorous diet. It primarily consumes insects, small invertebrates, fruit, and carrion. Occasionally, this species will also consume grasses and leaves.
Appearance
Western box turtle is a medium-sized turtle with a domed shell. It has rough, leathery skin, predominately brown or grayish-brown, marked with yellow or whitish lines forming concentric circles. The ventral side is lighter, often yellow, and the head exhibits bright yellow stripes. No noteworthy variation is present due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Western box turtle is an omnivorous, diurnal species adapted to grassland environments. Primarily solitary, they exhibit resolved territoriality during the active season, and their home ranges often overlap. Uniquely, they avoid extreme temperatures by retreating into burrows, a behavior known as aestivation or overwintering.
