Description
Eastern box turtle is notable for its unusual hibernation behavior, known as brumation, during which it retreats into burrows and reduces physiological activities to survive harsh winter months. Furthermore, this species exhibits an intriguing opportunistic omnivorous feeding strategy, consuming a diverse range of food from berries and insects to small fish and carrion, showcasing its ecological adaptability.

Appearance
Eastern box turtle has a prominent dome-shaped carapace, akin to a short, broad tail. Their skin, much like their shell, is semi-smooth and hard with a mottled pattern of olive to dark brown, occasionally accentuated by yellowish markings. Males typically have red or orange eyes, whilst females have brown or yellow eyes. The plastron (lower shell) is hingeless and generally yellowish or light-brown.
Behavior
Eastern box turtle is a largely solitary and territorial animal, often hiding in its enclosed shell when threatened. Primarily diurnal, it forages for food during the day, consuming a diet of both plant matter and small animals. Its survival in its natural habitat relies on hibernation during harsh winter months.
