Diet
Sehuencas water frog predominantly thrives on a carnivorous diet, mainly feeding on various aquatic invertebrates. The species exhibits a particular preference for small crustaceans and insect larvae, consuming these with frequency in its aquatic habitat.
Appearance
The sehuencas water frog is a medium-sized frog with a distinguishably plump body. Its skin is clammy and riddled with warts, primarily a mottled yellowish-green. The sehuencas water frog has notably bulbous eyes and dark speckles which vary in concentration and pattern across individuals. Unlike most frogs, it lacks a visible tympanum (ear) and has very reduced lungs, adaptations related to its mainly aquatic life. There is no significant difference in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Sehuencas water frog showcases semi-aquatic behaviors, foraging in freshwater habitats for plants and small invertebrates. It's nocturnal, chiefly active after sundown. Largely solitary, sehuencas water frog engages in vocal communication during mating season. Known for its unique terrestrial egg deposition, this species also exhibits a notable survival behavior in fully respiring through its skin, especially vital in oxygen-poor high-altitude waters of its habitat.
