 Description

Native to the California coast, the venomous red-bellied newt can be found in moist woodland areas and redwood forests. Its dark upper body matches the surrounding environment and camouflages the red-bellied newt from predators. When trouble persists, it flips over on its back to reveal its bright red belly. This visual warning is usually enough to dissuade a predator but if not, the skin of this newt contains enough venom to kill an adult person.

 Lifespan
 15-20 years
   Diet
Red-bellied newt primarily feeds on small aquatic animals, with a strong predilection for invertebrates. Their diet encompasses various insects, crustaceans, and molluscs, with considerable emphasis on aquatic worms and amphipods.
   Behavior
Red-bellied newt is predominantly nocturnal, surfacing from water bodies at dusk to forage. Solitary in nature, it exhibits territorial behaviors, aggressively challenging intruders. Survival adaptations include toxicity, making it unpalatable to predators, and the ability to switch from aquatic to land habitats depending on environmental conditions.
