Description
The mole has a cylindrical body and is 11 to 16 cm (4.3 to 6.3 in) long, weighing 70 to 130 g (2.5 to 4.6 oz). Females are typically smaller than males. The eyes are small and hidden behind fur, while the ears are just small ridges in the skin. The fur is usually dark grey, but the actual range of colors is larger, as due to the subterranean habits there is no disadvantage in having off-colored fur. European moles with white, light grey, tan, taupe, and black fur have all been reported.
General Info
Lifespan
3-5 years
Diet
European mole predominantly feeds on invertebrates, particularly earthworms, which form the bulk of its diet. It also consumes other soil arthropods, like beetles and larvae, supplementing its nutritional needs.
Appearance
European mole is a small mammal, measuring about 12-14 cm long with a cylindrical body shape. Its fur is dense, greyish-black or dark brown. The creature has tiny eyes, concealed by fur, and large scoop-like forefeet, evolved for digging. Its tail is short and covered by sparse fur. European mole lacks any unique markings or colorations. Physical differences due to age, gender or subspecies are not pronounced.
Behavior
European mole, commonly known as the European mole, exhibits solitary and territorial behaviors, primarily occupying and defending a network of underground tunnels. Notably adapted for a life subterraneously, european mole uses its forelimbs for efficient digging and its sensitive snout for locating food items, primarily invertebrates. Active both day and night, european mole rests intermittently and does not hibernate.
