Lifespan
5-10 years
Diet
Soft spiny-tailed gecko is primarily an insectivore, significantly obtaining nourishment from small arthropods. It displays a preference for consuming diverse insects, especially termites, and occasionally on eating spiders.
Appearance
Soft spiny-tailed gecko is a small to medium size gecko, recognized for its cylindrical body shape covered in rough, granular skin. Its most striking feature is a series of cone-shaped spines along its tail. The primary coloration is tan or sandy brown, often marked with darker spots or bands. Notably, males have a wider head and larger spines than females. A thin white line often runs from the mouth to the base of the tail, giving it a unique distinction.
Behavior
Soft spiny-tailed gecko primarily exhibits nocturnal, solitary behavior, actively hunting and foraging in its arid habitat during cooler temperatures of the night. This ensures a cooler body temperature and greater hunting success. The species is territorial, often utilizing pheromone secretions to mark boundaries. Unique tail-wave signals are used as defense mechanism to deter potential predators.
