Diet
Leopard tortoise is a herbivorous species with a preference for broadleaf plants. Its diet heavily consists of grasses, succulents, and, to a lesser extent, fruits, rich in fibers and poor in proteins. Occasional flowers and leaves enhance its nutrient absorption.
Appearance
Leopard tortoise is a medium-to-large tortoise with a domed carapace covered in polygonal plates. Its skin and shell are primarily yellow and brown, distinguished by bold, radiating patterns of dark patches and spots. Males are typically larger than females and display longer tails. Juveniles have a softer shell which slowly hardens as they mature.
Behavior
Leopard tortoise is a herbivorous, primarily solitary reptile, with important daily cycles of foraging and thermoregulation. Notably, they engage in 'termite fishing', using the vibrations to locate termite mounds. This species also exhibits unique male combat rituals for territory and mates, involving pushing contests without serious harm.
