Description

Scinax eurydice is a species of frog in the family Hylidae. It is endemic to Brazil. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, swamps, freshwater lakes, intermittent freshwater lakes, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marshes, heavily degraded former forest, and ponds. It is threatened by habitat loss.

As an insectivorous species, maracas snouted tree frog displays a preference for small to medium-sized arthropods. Its diet is primarily constituted by flies, spiders, and larvae, indicating an opportunistic and generalist feeding strategy. Its ingestion of aquatic macroinvertebrates also underscores its employment of sit-and-wait hunting tactics near water bodies.

Appearance

Maracas snouted tree frog is a petite to medium-sized frog with a slender body shape and smooth skin. Its overall coloration is a compelling mixture of yellow and green, often accompanied by dark brown blotches. Maracas snouted tree frog lacks any prominent features like horns or wings. Both sexes, albeit similar in appearance, are distinguishable, with males showcasing a more vibrant hue during breeding season.

Behavior

Maracas snouted tree frog is an amphibious tremble with nocturnal propensities, divided mainly into two notable behaviors: breeding and feeding. Males, during breeding periods, vocally attract females via distinct mating calls. They are not territorial, allowing multiple males to inhabit the same breeding pond. Food foraging occurs under cover of darkness where they actively hunt for small invertebrates.
