Diet
African red toad predominantly consumes small invertebrates, making it an insectivorous species. It feeds selectively on ants, beetles, and other arachnids, thrives on a protein-rich insect diet, which aids its metabolism and growth.
Appearance
African red toad is a medium-sized frog with a robust, triangular body shape and smooth skin. A distinguishing red-brown stripe runs from its snout, over the eye, and down the side. The primary coloration is pale to dark brown with unique yellow spots on the sides. Mature males are identified by their two sharp spines on the lower jaw.
Behavior
African red toad are nocturnal amphibians exhibiting solitary behavior. They are primarily insectivores, adept at capturing prey through a quick lunge-and-clamp technique. During mating, males adopt aggressive territorial behaviors, defending their habitats using vocalizations. Oddly, they survive dry seasons by forming waterproof cocoons, a unique adaptation for their arid habitat.
