Description

The sagebrush lizard (Sceloporus graciosus) is a common species of phrynosomatid lizard found at mid to high altitudes in the western United States of America. It belongs to the genus Sceloporus (spiny lizards) in the Phrynosomatidae family of reptiles. Named after the sagebrush plants near which it is commonly found, the sagebrush lizard has keeled and spiny scales running along its dorsal surface.

Sagebrush lizard's primary nutrients are derived from arthropods. This lizard species frequently forages for spiders, beetles, and other insects. Its diet also includes occasional servings of plant material.

Appearance

Sagebrush lizard is a medium to large lizard, up to 8.5 inches long. It has a body profile elongated and covered in coarse, spiny scales. The main coloration is a complex array of grays, browns, and greens, designed for camouflage. Males possess a pair of vibrant blue patches on the abdomen and throat, while females lack these patches. The tail is long and covered with spiny scales. Its throat and belly are typically cream, white or pale yellow. There are no significant differences due to age.

Behavior

Sagebrush lizard exhibits a diurnal lifestyle and basks heavily to regulate its body temperature. It is predominantly insectivorous but occasionally eats plant material. It has a socially solitary disposition, with males being territorial and aggressive to perceived threats. The species exhibits unusual push-up display and body wagging, likely for communication or threat deterrence.
