Description
Found in arid regions in western Mexico such as the Jalisco Dry Forest, the mexican patchnose snake is terrestrial and sometimes burrows while foraging for prey, using the thickened scales on its nose to help dig. It also climbs into trees to hunt at times, going after tree lizards and other arboreal prey.

Appearance
The mexican patchnose snake is a medium-sized, elongated lizard with smooth, dry scales. Its slender body ranges from brown to orange-tinged or grey, often exhibiting darker reticulated patterns, while the underbelly is typically pale. The tail is lengthy and tapered. It has a tapered head and large eyes, providing a somewhat serpentine appearance. No prominent distinctions occur due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Mexican patchnose snake displays diurnal activity, basking in the sun to gain heat and foraging for arthropods and small vertebrates. It exhibits a distinct autotomising behavior – the ability to shed its tail when threatened – as a survival tactic. Solitary outside mating season, mexican patchnose snake communicates via body movements and pheromone signals, displaying territorial aggression towards intruders.
