Description
The Siberian salamander, Salamandrella keyserlingii, is a species of salamander found in Northeast Asia. It is found primarily in Siberia, in wet woods and riparian groves, with outlying populations also in northern Kazakhstan and Mongolia, northeastern China, and on the Korean Peninsula. Siberian newt is an opportunistic feeder largely dependent on invertebrates. Its diet predominantly consists of various insects, spiders, and earthworms, but may also include smaller amphibians or their eggs during scarcity.
Appearance
Siberian newt is a small amphibian with a compact, cylindrical body and smooth, moist skin. This salamander has a predominant dark-brown coloration, with lighter, almost cream, belly. It does not have any particular markings except for some barely noticeable darker spots on the dorsal side. A key feature is its short limbs and a long tail, often larger than its body. There are no notable visual differences between the sexes or various age groups.
Behavior
Siberian newt are primarily terrestrial and display crepuscular behavior, feeding and moving at dawn and dusk. These amphibians are largely solitary, except during mating season. Winter adaptation includes profound hibernation beneath fallen leaves or dug soil. The species has a breeding ritual that includes male combat, highlighting a territorial display for mating privileges.
