Description
The alpine salamander (Salamandra atra) is a shiny black salamander found in the central, eastern and Dinaric Alps, at altitudes above 700Â m (2,300Â ft). The western Alps are inhabited by a similar species, Lanza's alpine salamander (Salamandra lanzai), in only one small area. No differences in length are seen between the sexes (9â14Â cm (3.5â5.5Â in)) and the sex ratio is 1:1. Their life expectancy is at least 10 years. Unlike other salamanders, whose larvae are developed in wa

Diet
Alpine salamander primarily consumes small invertebrates, with a particular preference for insects. Its diet often includes beetles, ants, and mites, which it hunts actively in its alpine habitats. Unlike many of its relatives, alpine salamander can also supplement its diet with some plant material.
Appearance
Alpine salamander is a small, robust amphibian with a cylindrical body and smooth, moist skin. It typically measures 8-10 cm long, with males being slightly smaller. The color of alpine salamander is deep black throughout, providing excellent camouflage in its rocky habitat. The species doesn't have any unique markings, and both genders look fairly identical, even in their different stages of life.
Behavior
Alpine salamander exhibits unique viviparous reproduction, giving birth to fully-formed young as opposed to laying eggs. This species primarily adopts a solitary lifestyle, interacting only during mating season. Adapted to alpine conditions, alpine salamander hibernates during winter in rock crevices to avoid harsh climate, exploiting its dark coloring for camouflage.
