Diet
Cotton-top tamarin's diet is primarily omnivorous, with a preference for fruits and insects, which together constitute over 80% of their diet. Their consumption of tree gum, nectar, and small vertebrates further diversifies their dietary intake.
Appearance
Cotton-top tamarin is a small monkey, with a body length of up to 32 cm, excluding a long tail. It exhibits a distinct bicolor fur of creamy-white and black or dark brown hues. Its notable features include a shock of white hair on its head and adorable black 'mask', tufted ears and orange legs. Both males and females look alike, but juveniles have less vibrant coloration compared to adults.
Behavior
Cotton-top tamarin is a highly social primate, living in troops of 3-9 individuals, often with a dominant female. These groups communicate with vocalizations and scent-marking to maintain territories. Cotton-top tamarin exhibits cooperative breeding, with infants mostly cared for by males. They primarily feed on insects, fruits, and plant exudates, using specialized lower incisors to gouge trees.
