Description
The Colombian wood turtle (Rhinoclemmys melanosterna) is one of nine species of turtle belonging to the genus Rhinoclemmys of the family Geoemydidae. It is found in Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama.

Colombian wood turtle is a herbivore, mainly subsisting on soft plant matter. It favors leaves and fallen fruit, yet also regularly consumes flowers and fungi, exhibiting a broad, plant-based dietary preference.
Appearance
Colombian wood turtle is a medium-sized turtle with a semi-dome carapace (shell) and thick, robust legs. The carapace is predominantly black, with yellowish-brown or orange markings on the margins. The plastron (lower shell) is predominantly black. Males have longer tails than females and a slightly concave plastron. The head is also black, often with unique yellow stripes.
Behavior
Colombian wood turtle is primarily terrestrial and nocturnal, showing strong homing instincts and showing defensive patterns when threatened, including biting. Although it often prefers solitude, it also displays phases of social interaction during mating season and minor commensal relationships. Colombian wood turtle is an omnivorous species with a diet including fruits, seeds, and small invertebrates.
