Diet
Indian rhinoceros is a herbivorous species with a primary diet of grass, particularly tall coarse grasses. The species also feeds on leaves, branches, fruits, and shoots when grasses are scarce, but they particularly favor young, supple grass shoots.
Appearance
Indian rhinoceros is a large, robust mammal with a grey, semi-smooth hide. It is recognisable by its single large horn protruding from its snout. This animal possesses a thick barrel-shaped body and relatively short, stout legs. No significant differences in appearance are observed due to age or gender. Its skin falls into broad folds, particularly at its shoulders and thighs, giving the appearance of an armour plate.
Behavior
Indian rhinoceros is largely solitary, with males particularly being territorial and using dung piles and urine sprays for marking boundaries. Known to be semi-aquatic, it spends substantial time wallowing in mud and water bodies. These crepuscular herbivores adopt a selective feeding strategy, seeking out protein-rich plant parts.
