Description

Rena humilis, known commonly as the western blind snake, the western slender blind snake, or the western threadsnake, is a species of snake in the family Leptotyphlopidae. The species is endemic to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Six subspecies are currently recognized, including the nominate subspecies described here.

Diet

Western blind snake's diet mainly consists of insects and terrestrial invertebrates. Particularly, it loves to prey on spiders, beetles, and other small soft-bodied creatures. Its feeding habits reflect its nocturnal and subterranean lifestyle.

Appearance

Western blind snake are small, slender snakes with smooth scales and a rounded body. They typically display an earthy brown coloration, often with a lighter, yellowish belly. Some specimens may feature dark spots or stripes. Juveniles exhibit a more pronounced pattern which fades with age. No distinct differences based on sex or subspecies are apparent.

Behavior

Western blind snake portrays a solitary and nocturnal lifestyle, majorly active during the night. It's territorial, marking domains using scent from glandular secretions. Known for its remarkable burrowing behavior, it demonstrates exceptional skills in constructing underground shelters for protection against excessive temperature and predators. This species is non-migratory and adheres to a carnivorous diet, hunting on small arthropods and larvae.
