Description
Steenbok resemble small Oribi, standing 45–60 cm (16"-24") at the shoulder. Their pelage (coat) is any shade from fawn to rufous, typically rather orange. The underside, including chin and throat, is white, as is the ring around the eye. Ears are large with "finger-marks" on the inside. Males have straight, smooth, parallel horns 7–19 cm long (see image left). There is a black crescent-shape between the ears, a long black bridge to the glossy black nose, and a black circular scent-gland in front of the eye. The tail is not usually visible, being only 4–6 cm long.

Diet
Steenbok predominantly thrives on a herbivorous diet, mainly consisting of grass and other low-growing plants. It also supplements its diet with fruits, shrubs, and seeds, revealing an adaptive feeding behavior in different seasons.
Appearance
Steenbok is a small antelope with a slender body. The males sport straight, sharp horns, while females lack these. Its fur is short and soft, with a brown to dark grey coloration, and a white underbelly. Young ones appear redder than adults. Notable is the black stripe running from its nose, through its eyes, to its ears. The tail is short, white and fuzzy. Its agile body is adapted to a life of rapid movements.
Behavior
Steenbok is primarily nocturnal, feeding on a diverse diet of leaves, flowers, and fruits. It's a solitary animal, exhibiting territorial behavior with dominant males marking territory with scent glands. Steenbok has a distinct flopping, rabbit-like run when escaping from predators, an adaptation for survival in its grassland habitat.
