Description

Ranitomeya benedicta, sometimes called the blessed poison frog, is a species of poison dart frog found in the lowland rainforest of the Pampas del Sacramento in southern Loreto and eastern San Martín Region, northeastern Peru. Before 2008, the species was considered a subspecies of Ranitomeya fantastica. The IUCN considers the species vulnerable because of limited habitat range, habitat loss, and collection for the pet trade.

Diet

Blessed Poison Frog primarily subsists on a diet of invertebrates, with a particular fondness for minute arthropods. As an opportunistic feeder, it exhibits significant foraging behavior, often consuming diverse insects like ants, mites, and small beetles.

Appearance

Blessed Poison Frog is a petite frog, dwarfed by a mere two centimeters in length. It boasts a long, slender body covered in smooth, moist skin, which manifests in vivid colorations. The dominant hue is a fiery red, offset with striking blue and black bands that wrap around its legs and sides. Notably, there's no significant variation in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies prevalent in this species.

Behavior

Blessed Poison Frog is a predominantly solitary species, pairing only temporarily during breeding season. Notably, it demonstrates intricate paternal care; males carry fertilized eggs to suitable microhabitats. Females exhibit an unusual foraging habit of seeking alkaloid-rich ants and mites, which contributes to blessed Poison Frog's toxic skin secretion. This behavior, along with their vibrant coloration, acts as an effective self-defense mechanism in their dense rainforest habitat.
