Description
The HokkaidÅ frog or the Ezo brown frog (Rana pirica) is a species in the Ranidae family found in HokkaidÅ, Japan, and Sakhalin. Its natural habitats are boreal forests, temperate forests, temperate shrubland, temperate grassland, rivers, swamps, intermittent freshwater lakes, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marshes, arable land, ponds, and irrigated land.

Appearance
The ezo red frog is a small sized frog with smooth skin. The dorsal surface displays mixed green and black colors in vibrant shading, resembling a camouflage pattern. It has black lateral lines extending from its eyes to its hind limbs. Ezo red frog has thin, long hind limbs equipped with webbed feet, which aids it in swimming. Notably, adult males have a pair of vocal sacs. There isn't significant variation in appearance with age or between genders except for the aforementioned vocal sacs.
Behavior
Ezo red frog is a nocturnal species, active predominantly at night. It forages for food mainly on land, exhibiting significant terrestrial habits. This species exhibits a solitary lifestyle, with males using distinctive calls to defend their territories during breeding seasons. Adapted for survival in forest environments, ezo red frog often conceals itself in leaf litter, exhibiting effective camouflage techniques.
