Diet

Mountain yellow-legged frog is largely insectivorous, feeding on a variety of aquatic and terrestrial insects, with a notable preference for diving beetles and stoneflies. The consumption of other small invertebrates also supplements its diet.

Appearance

Mountain yellow-legged frog is a small, smooth-skinned amphibian with sturdy back legs for jumping. It presents a mix of brownish and gray tones, often displaying irregular marking patterns of dark spots. Dorsolateral folds running from the eyes down to its compact body are distinctive features. There is little variation in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

Mountain yellow-legged frog is primarily nocturnal, active during damp, cold periods. It has a distinct, high-altitude diet, feeding on a varied range of invertebrates. Aquatically breeding, it exhibits complex reproductive behaviors, including mating calls. Mountain yellow-legged frog displaces aggression via posturing rather than physical altercation, with males asserting dominance for mating. Its survival in harsh conditions is owed to physiological adaptations like freeze resistance.
