Diet

Northern red-legged frog's primary diet consists of small invertebrates, particularly insects and mollusks. They also consume other arthropods, spiders, and occasionally, smaller amphibians. Preferring soft-bodied organisms, their consumption varies seasonally based on prey availability.

Appearance

Northern red-legged frog is a medium-sized amphibian with smooth, moist skin. It exhibits a range of colors, typically greenish-brown with darker spots or blotches. The ventral side, or belly, is often pale cream or yellowish. Some individuals may show a reddish tinge. Noteworthy are the large, prominent eyes and strong hind legs adapted for swimming and jumping. Neither age nor gender significantly alter this species' appearance.

Behavior

Northern red-legged frog is chiefly nocturnal, hiding during the day and foraging at night for invertebrates. They breed in shallow, still water bodies, laying eggs in globular clusters. These solitary amphibians are highly territorial, defending their territories fiercely from rivals. Northern red-legged frog has a distinct mating call, and females often demonstrate selective mate choice, a unique trait in this species.
