Diet
The dietary regimen of edible bullfrog leans towards carnivorous predilection. It primarily consumes a diet rich in invertebrates, particularly insects. Additionally, smaller vertebrates, like frogs and mice, supplement its nutritional intake.
Appearance
Edible bullfrog is a robust, fairly large frog with dry, warty skin. It's predominantly dark brown, but the belly is lighter, tending towards white. Its skull is heavily ossified, giving it a flattened appearance. It boasts a long, broad maxilla—its most distinguishing feature—appearing somewhat like a beak. The small, bead-like, golden-brown eyes are set on top of its head. Males are smaller than females and have darker throat coloration to signal maturity.
Behavior
Edible bullfrog are predominantly solitary creatures that exhibit territorial aggression, especially males during breeding season. Males vocalize extensively with guttural roars to establish territory. They are noted for their burrowing sleep behaviors and their sit-and-wait hunting strategy, lying motionless until prey is detected.
