Diet

Red salamander primarily feeds on small invertebrates. Its diet consists chiefly of aquatic insects, annelids, and mollusks, rendering it a carnivorous consumer in freshwater ecosystems.

Appearance

Red salamander is a medium-sized salamander with a slender, elongated body, reaching lengths of up to 20 cm. Covered in smooth, moist skin, its vivid coloration ranges from bright red to reddish-brown, often marked with irregular black or dark brown blotches. It exhibits a long tail, which accounts for more than half of its total length. Distinguished by a broad, flat head with protruding eyes, it doesn't show significant variations in appearance based on age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

Red salamander is a predominantly solitary, nocturnal species, exhibiting secretive and burrowing behavior. Most active in damp environments, it forages for small invertebrates. A key aspect of its behavior is its unique defensive mechanism; when threatened, it emits an unpalatable, sticky secretion deterring predators. It is noteworthy for its territorial behavior, displaying aggression when its space is invaded.
