Description
The sheltopusik /ËÊÉltÉËpjuËzɪk/ (Pseudopus apodus), also commonly called Pallas' glass lizard or the European legless lizard, is a species of large glass lizard found from southern Europe to Central Asia.
General Info
Lifespan
20-25 years
Diet
Sheltopusik predominantly consumes a carnivorous diet, encompassing a range of small vertebrates like birds and mammals. They also integrate invertebrates such as insects, spiders and worms into their food repertoire.
Appearance
Sheltopusik is a large, legless reptile with a long, cylindrical body covered in glossy, smooth scales. This species mainly showcases a uniform grey or brown color, sometimes displaying faintly banded patterns on the body. It has a forked tongue, used for olfaction, and its tail ends in a thick, blunt tip. No significant differences in appearance are noted among different genders or ages within this species.
Behavior
Sheltopusik is primarily diurnal, though nocturnal during high temperatures. A solitary reptile, it's largely terrestrial but climbs trees and swims well when needed. Sheltopusik hibernates in colder months within deep burrow systems, emerging in spring, ready to engage in territorial disputes and mate. Notably, it manifests a 'glass snake' defense: when threatened, it stiffens, resembling a fragile, inanimate object.
