Description
The tent tortoise (Psammobates tentorius) is a species of tortoise and one of three members of the genus, Psammobates. Known locally as the Karoo tent tortoise, this highly variable species is found in the Karoo and semi-desert regions of Southern Africa.

Karoo tent tortoise predominantly subsists on a herbivorous diet, feeding extensively on succulent plants in its native arid habitats. Its nutrition further derives from consuming small leaves, stems and seasonal fruits available within the scrublands it inhabits.
Appearance
Karoo tent tortoise is a medium-sized tortoise featuring a highly domed shell exhibiting an appealing geometric star pattern of yellow and brown. Its sturdy limbs are skillfully adapted for digging, while its head and neck are elongated. There is no significant difference in appearance due to age, gender or subspecies.
Behavior
Karoo tent tortoise is typically a solitary and territorial species, often limiting interactions with conspecifics to mating. Their primary activity involves foraging for a diet primarily comprised of grasses and herbs, using their well-adapted beak. They are sedentary, spending most of their time in or near their burrows which they meticulously maintain. Males display aggressive behavior during the breeding season to secure mates and defend their territories.
